Let Me Change Your Mind (2021)

6’+
For 2 woodwind instruments
George and Ricardo’s Version, recorded at Guildhall School of Drama, April 2021

“Let me change your mind”, a duo piece for musicians especially beginner players who feels burnt out and struggles with the technical aspect of playing their instrument and forgets why they chose that instrument in the first place. This piece aims to remind them why they started playing, and stimulate their interest and love for playing and making music.

“Let me change your mind” is a duet exercise played in isolation. Without rehearsals, without eye contact, just music. Two players are intended to be placed in two rooms next to each other, separated by a wall; where they can only hear each other’s instrument, but are not able to see each other. This is done to block out all other factors of playing together, solely relying on the “Musical Sense”.

This piece is meant to be “attempted”. Two players practice their part in their own time and attempt to play it once they get together. It can be separated into 3 parts, “Warm Up”, “Exercise” and “Game”. “Warm Up” initiate the musical bonding between two musicians, while “Exercise” further strengthens their bonding. “Game” is written in cells, when both players successfully play through cell A, they both move to cell B. But if they fail, they need to restart from the first cell. Repeat this till reaching the last cell.
